MUN Academy is a non-profit, Rome-based association that delivers high-quality, applied and focused education for young professionals, undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of international relations, political science, law, economics and management. Founded in 2014, MUN Academy comes from a combination of motivated and committed individuals who felt the need to propose an alternative to the numerous, expensive and repetitive simulations of international simulations to which the general public was exposed to in Rome. Thus, positively convinced to spread a rejuvenating spirit into a stagnant situation and enthralled by MUN Academy potentials, its founding members embarked on their new journey with great expectations, ideas and projects that began to turn into reality immediately. Primarily, MUN Academy organises and supports international youth events, such as Model United Nations (MUN), institutional simulations and training seminars, while standing as a coordination and quality assessment forum for international youth event’s organisers.
There is a widespread amount of misunderstanding, misconception, and ambiguity on the format and purpose of international youth conferences, applied training, and above all Model United Nations (MUN) in Italy. More and more often, groups of students or universities create societies and organise international conferences, although participants who approach these realities are usually not aware of the wide range of choices they have and are not fully satisfied with their experience. Some organizations take advantage of this widespread ignorance and superficial approach: for example, some even dare promoting their activities as “internship at the United Nations” when what really happens is an application to the New York Model United Nations, which takes place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. MUN Academy aims at overcoming these gross manipulations and amateur practices.
Amongst others, one of its challenges lies in reverting the poor understanding of the core mission, agenda and functioning of public and international institutions, which are superficially simulated in international youth conferences too often. Moreover, Italy’s academic programmes do not foresee many opportunities to put into practice what university manuals teach: MUN Academy would like to allow a large number of students to go beyond the limits of book theories and develop the necessary skills to succeed also in their professional life by applying soft skills such as mastering negotiation techniques and public speaking. Model United Nations and other international youth events in Italy lack of coordination and so do their quality standards: MUN Academy would like to initiate and maintain a lively dialogue with its members to coordinate strategies, develop common policies and create best practices that benefit all the members of such a network, should they decide to join. Recognition to merit is generally lacking in international youth conferences: MUN academy would like to promote those future participants who express extraordinary skills and abilities during the preparatory work, the debates and in drafting, giving them the chance through its network and allow them to have access to better positions in other conferences around Europe and in the world. Many young Italians do not get chances to research and debate on international issues or to get international exposure by interacting with people from different countries and cultures or participating to international conferences, unless they leave the country, for long or short periods of time. We would like to give them the opportunity to revert this trend in a contest of promoting Italy’s local excellence.
Since its foundation, MUN Academy has managed to establish a very successful network amongst students and universities – especially in Rome – ensuring direct lines of communication with its primary audience: undergraduate and graduated students as well as young professionals. This has been the key driver to deliver successful events and in the establishment of good relations with participants as well as institutions, dissipating the aforementioned perceptions in many participants. Events such as FAO Model 2015, RoMEU 2016, UNISAMUN 2016 organised by and with the support of MUN Academy are just some of the concrete examples of its successful history; its successes have also granted MUN Academy a recognition by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who attributed his personal Medal of the President of the Republic to one of MUN Academy’s events.
MUN Academy is and will be fully committed to continuing this strike of successes by pursuing the highest quality, interaction and involvement for its participants. In the years to come, MUN Academy is planning seminars, courses, simulations and also many occasions to be directly involved in the working of international and local institutions such as the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) through its Civil Society Mechanism (CSM), the Youth Council of the Metropolitan Area of Rome and many others.
Mission and Vision
MUN Academy delivers high-quality applied training, civic education and career guidance to younger generations, while organizing and supporting international youth events, in the context of a policy of promotion of local territories. MUN Academy wishes to become Italy’s primary network for international youth conferences and the Italian point of reference in the field of the youth applied training.
MUN Academy applies the highest standards and seek professional solutions to international youth conferences management and applied training thanks to more than a decade of experience. It is no coincidence that international applicants perceive Italian Model United Nations in general as low-level simulations, with poor academic content and a good gym for first-timers. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with this perception, it underlines that Italian Model United Nations have reckoned sufficient to maintain the minimum.
MUN Academy would serve Italian students societies the chance to excel, thrive and expand while differentiating the offer in the international youth conferences market to attract also average and experienced participants, who currently prefer Northern European simulations. MUN Academy would also serve as gateway to reach out greater realities with a stronger voice, being the Italian network of MUN Societies.
In this sense, MUN Academy would also become the Italian hub of Model United Nations Societies and other student bodies interested in international affairs.
